The Jeffrey Thomas Hayden Foundation (JTHF) hosted its annual Play Ball Dinner/Auction on March 28, 2009 at the Savannah Center in West Chester, Ohio. Over $40,000 was raised at the event to support the fight against pediatric brain cancer. The Foundation is a local non-profit 501(c)3 based in West Chester, Ohio established in the memory of Jeffrey Thomas Hayden who lost his struggle with brain cancer in 2004 one month shy of his 13th birthday. Jeffrey, the son of Timothy & Cindy Hayden of West Chester, was a student in the Lakota Schools completing 6th grade at Freedom Elementary prior to his passing.

A check for $10,000 in support of a research project for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center was presented to Dr. Lars Wagner, Associate Professor of Pediatrics. This was the second installment of a $25,000 commitment to support a pediatric brain cancer research study under the supervision of Dr. Fouladi, Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics.

Also in attendance were representatives from The Ohio State University. Ms. Wendy Pestrue, J.D., Director of Development - Neurosciences, gave a progress report about the $250,000 Research Fellowship established for pediatric cancer research by JTHF at The Ohio State University. This Research Fellowship was funded over a three year period and was made possible by the dedicated efforts of many volunteers and financial supporters of the Foundation through events such as the Dinner/Auction.

Honored at the Dinner/Auction was volunteer, Chelsea Pitonyak, a junior at Mt. Notre Dame High School who organizes the annual JTHF Book Drive in memory of Jeffrey, her former classmate at Freedom Elementary. The JTHF Book Drive collects books, toys, and DVDs that are donated to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. This year the JTHF Book Drive collected almost 6,000 items that were delivered to the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Liberty Campus.

The Jeffrey Thomas Hayden Foundation has also sponsored an annual 5K Fun Walk at the VOA Park and an annual Golf Classic at Beckett Ridge Country Club. The Annual Golf Classic is set for September 28, 2009. More information about the Foundation may be found online at www.JTHF.org
