The Jeffrey Thomas Hayden Foundation recently recognized two outstanding
Lakota Ridge Junior High School students as the 2007 Jeffrey Thomas
Hayden Memorial Award winners. This year’s recipients, Jason DeFevers
and Rachel Huxhold have both shown exemplary behavior through academics
and athletics.
Jason DeFevers, an eighth grade football player, who upholds a 4.0
GPA, was nominated by his coach Chris O’Rourke. Jason was voted football
captain by his teammates for his perseverance and hard work. Jason broke
both his leg and his arm during the season yet still kept a positive
attitude and came ready to play each game.
Rachel Huxhold led the eighth grade girls volleyball team to the
Greater Miami Conference championship as team captain. Rachel’s
volleyball coach Robyn Lallathin, nominated her because of her spirit
and energy. Rachel is also a leader on the girls basketball team and is
enrolled in all advanced classes maintaining a 3.9 GPA.
The Jeffrey Thomas Hayden Memorial Award was established in 2004 at
Lakota Ridge Junior High School in West Chester, Ohio. The past and
present Principals Ed Rudder and Andre Gendreau, School Counselor Susan
Fraley and Athletic Director Doug Carlberg, along with numerous faculty
and staff at Ridge have all been instrumental in creating and promoting
the award.
Each year the Jeffrey Thomas Hayden Memorial Award is presented
during the Fall Sports Awards Banquet to an athlete who has been
nominated by their coach and then selected by a separate committee. The
recipients are chosen based on their shared characteristics of Jeff; a
good friend to others, a hard worker in practice and during games and a
model in the classroom. The recipients also exhibit a positive attitude
and display courage in the face of adversity.

The Jeffrey Thomas Hayden Foundation is a registered 501c(3) non profit organization that was created to Make a Difference in
the fight against pediatric brain tumors. For more information visit our
