The Jeffrey T. Hayden Memorial Award winners were announced
last night at the Lakota Ridge Jr. High Fall Sports Banquet to a packed
house. JTHF President Tim Hayden and his wife Cindy were on hand to
present the award to this years winners to Annie Morgan and Brogan Hill.
The Jeffrey T. Hayden Memorial Award was established in October of 2004
at Lakota Ridge Jr. High School in West Chester, Ohio. The schools
principal, Mr. Ed Rudder, counselor Susan Fraley and athletic director
Douglas Carlberg, along with the staff at Ridge Jr. have been
instrumental in creating and promoting this award, which is presented
annually at the school’s Fall Sports Award Banquet.
The award is open to all 8th grade students that participate in a fall
sport at Ridge. Student athletes are nominated by their coaches and a
final decision is made by a selection committee. Recipients of this
award must be someone who exemplifies the special characteristics of
Jeff:
- He or she must be a good friend to others and be involved in
community service,
- He or she must work hard in practice and on game day, and be a
good team-mate to others,
- He or she must be someone who is a positive influence and who
displays courage in the face of adversity,
- And most important of all, he or she must be a good student and
excel in the classroom.
The recipient will receive an individual plaque to take with them and
their name will be permanently engraved on a plaque that hangs in the
school. The inscription on the award was actually written by Jeff and it
says…
“Never Give Up. Set goals that seem impossible,
with perseverance you can see how easy they are to achieve.”
Previous winners include Paige Foster in 2004 and Josh Fresson in 2005.
This year introduced an added twist… The selection committee has chosen
both a male and female recipient for this year’s award.
This year’s female student athlete winner, Annie Morgan, was a
starting player on the Ridge Volleyball and Basketball teams and
maintains a 3.8 GPA. She was nominated by her Volleyball and Basketball
coach, Robyn Lallathin who stated “She is a very determined person and
has shown great will to achieve her goals. She is a hard worker, a true
leader and a good sportsman. She is very motivated and has an
intimidating presence at the net.”
This year’s male student athlete, Brogan Hill, was a starting
player on the Football and Wrestling teams, and is involved in many
extra-curricular activities at Ridge. He may not be the biggest person
on the field but he has the biggest heart and gives 110%. He loves life
and displays a positive attitude in everything he does.
He is a natural leader and a team player and was voted as one of the
team captains by the players. He has a 3.61 GPA and was nominated by his
football coach Austin Rhoads, who stated...“He is a winner, a leader and
a role model in life.”
Congratulations to Annie Morgan and Brogan Hill from all of us at JTHF
and the staff at Lakota Ridge!
