The Jeffrey Thomas Hayden Foundation (JTHF) took a major step
forward in Making a Difference in the fight against pediatric brain
tumors with the creation of an Endowed Fellowship at The Ohio State
University College of Medicine. The announcement of this position was
made at the
very
successful JTHF “Play Ball” Dinner and Auction held at the prestigious
Manor House in Mason, Ohio on January 14th, 2006. The event helped to
raise over $51,000 towards the foundation’s projects.
Under the terms of the agreement reached with The Ohio State
University Foundation, JTHF will commit $250,000 over a three-year
period to establish the fund which will be used to connect researchers
at the university with doctors at various Children’s Hospitals, with the
goal of providing doctors an insight to the leading-edge research being
done at OSU and to provide feedback to the researchers on promising
treatment options.
The official name of the fund is “The Jeffrey Thomas Hayden
Foundation Postdoctoral Endowed Fellowship Fund in Pediatric Brain Tumor
Research at the Ohio State University Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital
and the Richard L. Solove Research Institute.” This fund is open for
additional contributions above and beyond the initial $250,000. Contact
JTHF to learn more about how your gift can help make a difference.
E.
Antonio Chiocca MD, PhD, a principal researcher at the Ohio State
University Medical Center and Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery,
will oversee the Fellowship position as part of his research team. Dr.
Chiocca is a world renowned brain tumor expert and has been featured in
numerous medical publications. He has authored or co-authored more than
100 articles and book chapters, and holds three patents, with four
others pending. He is an outstanding physician-scientist who is
nationally recognized as a brain tumor specialist and is a leading
investigator in the use of gene therapies for brain tumors and other
central nervous system disorders. Recently OSU announced a collaborative
effort with Columbus and Cincinnati Children’s Hospitals that extends
the research projects and clinical trials that have been developed at
OSU for use in adults and children.
Dr.
Jennifer Cutter has been named the first recipient of the newly created
JTHF Postdoctoral Endowed Fellowship and was introduced by Dr. Chiocca
at the Play Ball Dinner and Auction. She has a doctorate in Neuroscience
from the University of Cincinnati and is one of the new generation of
bright and dedicated researchers at Ohio State. Before joining the team
at OSU, Dr. Cutter was a postdoctoral research fellow in the Center for
Translational Therapeutics in the Brain Tumor Institute at the Cleveland
Clinic. She will be under the direction of Dr. Chiocca and the
outstanding experience she brings to OSU will dramatically enhance
research in fighting brain tumors.
“The commitment and effort by the Jeffrey Thomas Hayden Foundation
will significantly impact the fight against this deadly form of cancer
that strikes children and adults in a devastating fashion”, said Dr.
Chiocca. “JHTF has recognized that support of scientists at the earliest
stages of their career (i.e. during the “postdoctoral fellowship”) is
now needed more than ever, so that we can ensure that the brightest and
best concentrate their energy in finding the reasons why this cancer
happens and discovering a cure.”
JTHF President and Founder, Tim Hayden, stated “The agreement between
JTHF and OSU makes good on a commitment made to Jeffrey prior to his
passing in September of 2004. This is the first of what we hope are many
steps the Foundation will take to help make a difference in the fight
against this deadly disease.”
